Today I did an interview for a national paper for Brexit 10 years on, and I am sure you’ll see it soon enough. However at the end of the interview I was asked where would the UK be in 5 years from now. My answer was simply until the elephant in the room is addressed fully, worse off and poorer.
In actual fact since the system was introduced the government has lost hundreds of millions of pounds, and what’s more everyone in the hospitality and drinks industry told them this would be the outcome. But they did it anyway.
The reality is the drinks industry is losing ground every year because people can’t afford the taxes being applied. Rolling back a bit would allow the industry to grow. Would result in higher revenue for everyone and a better product to market offering . But what do I know after 30 years!

I campaigned hard to not be where the UK is today. But the government thought it knew best, it didn’t and they still won’t change track. They have now opened a forum to ask the industry if the system is working, but haven’t made it widely known because they already know the answer.
Some of you will know I am a massive critic of the government system to tax all alc by ABV. The huge burden this has put on imports simply can’t be underestimated. But you would think the government did this to earn more tax right? Wrong. They now earn less a lot less.
