My response to recent smartphone-causing-fertility-decline papers is that researchers are using instrumental variables as a a substitute for theory and logic and this is incorrect.
Have no particular view on the smartphone hypothesis, but do think people could look one inch beyond their noses before extrapolating from their own complaints to a global trend that people have been researching for decades.
