Artists, I am curious. Personally when I make a detailed painting I render the background first until I am content. I do this because the foreground is like a treat for me. If I did it the other way around my BGs might lack details as I am afraid I would quit too early... What's your strategy?

Here a quick behind the scenes WIP of this painting. I tend to think quite a lot about composition. How to direct the viewers eye. All major lines (pole, legs, mane/tail, carousel) point towards the face of the character. So your eyes travel, but (should) arrive at the face naturally...
