Locally acquired ascariasis (an intestinal worm infection) is vary rare in Canada, but it can occur. We report on a locally acquired case from Northern Ontario in @CMAJ. Great work by Dr. Foote. www.cmaj.ca/content/198/...
Screwworm has now reached Texas, breaching the barrier designed to keep it from moving north of Panama. These larvae can devastate livestock. Human cases are less common but can be severe & disfiguring. We recently saw a case in Toronto in a traveller returning from Costa Rica.

Challenges to control this Ebola virus outbreak: 1. Geographically widespread, including urban settings (Goma) & cross-border spread (Uganda) 2. Non-Zaire strain with no approved vaccines or therapeutics 3. Regional security challenges that can hamper a public health response

Canada taking more stringent steps to reduce the risk of Ebola virus importation. Travel is not banned, but those arriving from impacted countries will isolate for 21 days. Link: tinyurl.com/nhfphu5s, by Lauren Pelley & Jennifer La Grassa
Hantavirus (Andes virus) modelling with @jasonandrews.bsky.social: Long incubation & ~subclinical shedding in some may limit symptomatic screening, as transmission can occur before symptom onset. Longer isolation with periodic testing may reduce spread. Preprint: tinyurl.com/3n74863m

There are currently no licensed Ebola virus vaccines for the Bundibugyo strain causing the current outbreak in DRC and Uganda. A team at Oxford is working on a dedicated vaccine candidate, which should be ready for testing shortly. Link: tinyurl.com/3cwjat8p

Mass gatherings like the World Cup can facilitate the introduction of infections & spur outbreaks. But context matters. A recent preprint suggests the overall risk is (mostly) low. Still, it's always best to be prepared. Great write-up by @kakape.bsky.social. tinyurl.com/23cw2mx7

WHO has declared the #Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). First time this has been done without consulting an emergency committee. Extraordinary move that speaks to how concerning the facts on the ground look right now
