It's out. My latest feature for @science.org, from aboard the RRS Discovery: a deep look at the past, present, and future of AMOC, told through the RAPID program. AMOC is weakening -- maybe, probably. But it also may be more resilient than some have made it seem.
Studies of the Atlantic's circulation find signs of both weakening and unexpected stability in the face of global warming
The ocean current that warms Europe may be more resilient than feared

⚒️ Significant* that scaling relationship is different for supershear earthquakes: “[they] tend to be longer than their subshear counterparts for any given magnitude and thus may expose a greater population to shaking.” *maybe not surprising, but this is the first time I’ve seen it so baldy stated.
I think I appreciate the *intent* of this article, but ultimately it goes far enough off the rails in multiple spots to be harmful. Too excited about a couple pet ideas, too dismissive of some things that are observable daily realities for those with LC.

✍️ I went deep on what's happening with machine learning in weather and climate models. I learned a lot and you can, too. (I like to promote the reading of my writing by making it sound like assigned work. It's called marketing, look it up.)

You always gotta laugh at the aristocratic verbiage used to describe the sin of speaking truth to harmful bullshit.
ICYMI If you're wondering what to make of new "AI models" for weather forecast or climate science, I've got you covered. I talked to a number of researchers and found that the story is pretty different between the two fields, but in both cases it's more complex than it looks on the surface.

RIP to an absolute legend, Stacey King. I hope Stacey is remembered as a man of the people. He would stay for 45 minutes to an hour after games every night for 20 years in order to take pictures and meet Bulls fans.
