Something this has really demonstrated is that whatever you might think of pure self-determination of identity, there are really only 2 alternatives to it:
1) Arbitrary determination by a state body
2) "Other-determination", in which everyone's personal prejudices about everyone else get free reign

Legal documents and IDs are now unable to provide proof of identity, instead we have created a form of self-ID where anyone doubting your ID has huge leniency to question and query you and you have no ability to respond because they've delegitimised any potential proof.
