The UK insists on rejecting both self-determination and state determination, and then acts shocked when everyone's personal prejudices are all that's left.
Something this has really demonstrated is that whatever you might think of pure self-determination of identity, there are really only 2 alternatives to it:
1) Arbitrary determination by a state body
2) "Other-determination", in which everyone's personal prejudices about everyone else get free reign
