W/ my colleague Martha Kenney, new piece on what we call “AI centrism” — a position that claims to split the difference btw genAI boosterism and detraction, but still leads to its acceptance and use.
E.g.:
- “We will use AI ethically/responsibly/thoughtfully”
- “We will keep a human in the loop”
Martha Lincoln
Anthropic and OpenAI are dangerous and unsustainable companies that shouldn’t be taken public. The AI bubble is a con and retail investors are the marks.
AI doesn’t have ROI, it’s nothing like AWS or Uber, and it’s got no post-bubble recovery story.

#IASSIST2026 is over (best IASSIST ever, of course). Probably will not get to go next year (Vancouver seems amazing though), but 2028 will take place in Lausanne, Switzerland, with @forsresearch.bsky.social :)
If you missed it, you can watch a replay of the Luddite Lab Resource Hub launch at the @dairinstitute.bsky.social PeerTube channel.
We discuss the Hub and have an incredible conversation with organizers Anna Iovine, @benjaminharnett.com, and Pomai Neil.

I spent more time on this piece than almost anything else I've written in the last year. Building a better, more decentralized internet is an inherent necessity if you want a functioning democracy.
I hope people find it a useful encapsulation of where we're at.
