As I begin work on a fountain pen inspired by the Mahabharata, I have been reading an introductory guide and exploring a small part of this vast epic.

We faithfully rendered Sakai Hōitsu’s Persimmon Tree onto a fountain pen. The original screen is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A large Rosenthal plate I restored with kintsugi. The damaged area was a chip on the foot ring. To camouflage it, I created a maki-e version of the Rosenthal logo on the back, with part of the design extending onto the front. Just to be safe, I obtained permission from Rosenthal before painting it.
A fountain pen inspired by a tiered jubako urushi box decorated with fruit and vegetable motifs by Shibata Zeshin, one of Japan’s greatest masters of maki-e.
