An interesting petition calls for a single media regulator, across press and broadcast: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/76... However we get there, it is really important that all media is subject to high standards which protect the public. Clearly the status quo is not good enough.
In journalism and media law, the “public interest” can sometimes be used as a defence in legal cases where information is published that could have affected someone’s rights, such as their privacy. The question to ask is: Was it really in the public interest to release this information?
