Prime Minister Stephen Harper tried to introduce a bill in 2012 called C30, that was almost identical to C-22. Here is the @liberalca.bsky.social, including the current speaker of the HoC & fmr leader @bobbyrae48.bsky.social arguing AGAINST that bill. #cdnpoli @openmedia.org @iclmg-csilc.bsky.social

The Canadian government says their new privacy legislation contains protections for children's data. This could mean more privacy violations. In the UK, the ICO has been weaponizing privacy protections for kids, to force mandatory age verification all users, in order to determine who is under 18.

In a notable case, the ICO actually demanded that Imgur subject all of its UK users to mandatory age verification.
Protecting kids online should not come at the cost of violating user privacy. Age verification results in unacceptable privacy violations. #cdnpoli #canpoli #c34 #c22 #canada
When the same government wants to mandate age verification for millions, establish mandatory metadata retention, adopt weak privacy rules for political parties, and sideline the Privacy Commissioner, it feels more like privacy as a fundamental gaslight.

Well that was a completely unexpected ending to today's #SECU Committee meeting on Bill C-22. #c22

This must be the most bizarre and troubling comment during the entire lawful access debate. A Liberal MP says Bill C-22 “has nothing to do with the privacy of people and their information.” Inconceivable given the committee hearings and the concerns raised. www.michaelgeist.ca/2026/06/libe...
Tens of millions of Canadians will be required to age verify to use social media when the ban launches. My post on how the government plans to implement it without standards, privacy review, or an enforcement mechanism, with potential exemptions years away. www.michaelgeist.ca/2026/06/the-...
