There was a theory, in the 80s, that HIV spread from green monkeys to humans when a batch of poorly sterilized serum was used to amplify and produce a hepatitis vaccine for local use in West Africa. This was scientifically plausible and endorsed by AMFAR.

My analogy is, the "accidental lab leak" origin of COVID was incorrect because of later evidence, not because it was a conspiracy theory endorsed by right wing douche bags. You can't resolve virology by shouting, and it's disturbing that this is still a culture war issue.
