I went from reading a few books a year to around one a week. I wanted to write down how I got there, how it involved rethinking my relationship to attention, and why I believe reading books can heal your brain. I hope this gives you something useful! johnpaulbrammer.substack.com/p/how-i-lear...
sometimes i fear i sound too preachy abt books but it hasn't been that long since i regained the reading habits i had lost for a while so i really felt that essay lol i want everyone else to re/gain it as well..! it's one of the easiest things you can do to make life bearable and your mind clearer
i think a lot of people immediately expect to be swept away because reading is romanticized that way a lot and then give up immediately when that doesn't happen... there's no way around it you gotta make an effort first. getting swept away comes after

speaking of the feeling of connectedness it really says a lot how many writers give you the same advice along the lines of keeping a clean house, like mary oliver saying you gotta be reliably there to meet your romeo aka muse and stephen king saying the same thing but with a different made up guy
that applies to any habit really... i'm struggling a lot to keep my house clean for writing for example and oftentimes it's a mess in there LOL but even knowing that i should be aiming for a clean house instead of miracles is a huge help
really enjoyed this part as well because truly! it's also one of my favorite things about reading multiple books at once/in a short span of time cause the feeling IT'S ALL CONNECTED AAAHH is intensified that way! it satisfies your pattern loving brain like nothing else and makes it so much fun
it's not just limited to books though of course. for example now that i'm making an effort to watch at least one movie a week i've been experiencing it a lot through movies as well... man... i love art

found both examples
i like the clean house metaphor a lot! you're gonna have to spend effort to clean it and keep it that way but it's going to make everything else come easier. and the hardest step is going to be the first one to clean up a house full of garbage lol
