From one of the many PR emails I'm getting about the government social media ban. Obviously this is from someone selling this technology. But stop to think about just how utterly dystopian this is: *constant* video surveillance of all online activity, for everyone.
'We are clamping down on the harm caused by social media. 'Read all about it on the Nazi pogrom deepfake abuse website'
1. UK government proposes sweeping new laws to regulate the Internet 2. Experts warn the powers are badly-defined, technologically unfeasible and will be difficult to enforce 3. Government passes them anyway 4. Enforcement turns out to be hard 5. Government proposes more new laws
RIP Roy Hattersley. A pragmatic style of politics in unswerving service of radical, egalitarian ends. A rare blend then, which would be rarer still today. www.thenewworld.co.uk/matt-kelly-r...
Prohibition has never worked. We already know that very high numbers of under 16s in Australia continue to access social media notwithstanding the 'ban'. The same will happen in the UK. All a ban does is given the impression of having 'done something' while ignoring the actual issues.
