GIMP is objectively unintuitive and also can’t parse text layers of PSDs properly, it’s designed by FOSS people that have never created tools for professionals. Telling someone to use it for their job is like saying you can make a feature on iMovie. Technically true but not serious.
I think the example of this I saw that actually made a lot of sense was Altered Carbon, since a major part of that narrative is that they have essentially digitized your brain so no matter what body you're shunted into, You and your sense of self is unchanged, so gender is in fact immutable in AC.

like I believe that a material change in your body and your sense of self are deeply linked, I don't really think it's possible to swap one out without radically changing the other, and any narrative which doesn't work with that pressuposition is liable to fall into some Opinions about tranness

if you find GIMP hard to use you probably shouldn't be allowed to drive a car or shop at a grocery store. it's literally just buttons with pictures on them that do the things the pictures represent. you don't even need to be able to read.
