7/7 And they have exhibits on @idabwellssociety.bsky.social and a lot more. And the Smithsonians are open until 11PM tonight!
5/7 They had quite a few excerpts from Provincial Freedom, edited by the first African American woman to publish and edit a newspaper, Mary Ann Shadd Cary.
2/7 They have the trenchcoat of Robert Churchwell, the first African-American journalist to be at a major Southern newspaper.
4/7 They have the desk of Robert Abbott, the owner of the Chicago Defender.
6/7 They have the paper cutter of the Baltimore Afro-American, one of the most widely circulated black newspapers on the East Coast.
John H. Murphy Sr., a formerly enslaved person, founded the paper in 1892 and they used this machine to trim stacks of papers for 70 years.
