Contrary to previous studies, strong assumptions are here relaxed such as Markovian waiting times, long-lasting immunity, and stationary resident strain epidemiology, while investigating the interplay between immune waning, (intrinsic) contagiousness, immune escape, and introduction time.
Determining the conditions that enable the spread of a new pathogen strain on top of a current resident one is key for the surveillance and control of infectious diseases -- as shown in #COVID, but this is also of major interest for #Respiratory_Virus_X preparedness.
👏 Another great piece of work by Bastien Reyné, now a reference in non-Markovian & out-of-equilibrium dynamics, at the interface between #epidemiology, #evolutionary_biology, #immunology, with applications to #public_health!
