Dawntrail shines in its excellent battle content. All the dungeons, trials, raids are incredible. I really like that difficulty was turned up a notch from how sleepy Endwalker felt.
I didn't think it would happen but I've been totally brought back onboard now.
If I have one wish for the MSQ story moving forward, especially in patch MSQs, it's to spend less time on character drama and more on worldbuilding. HW/SB/ShB patches were all deeply engaging and helped flesh out the world, and we really fell off hard in the Zero and Calyx arcs.
Very high highs and very low lows in that story. Living Memory was a masterpiece. Patches 1 through 3 were a painful exercise in repetition and constant emotional recaps (is the WoL just everyone's therapist now?) Calyx was meh until... y'know.
My thoughts on Dawntrail now that I'm finally all caught up...
Abandoning Tural halfway through was a big mistake and I'm digging the new storyline now that I've swallowed it, but it's hard to see the swerve to "Shadowbringers 2" as anything else than a lack of confidence.
I just realized the reason I'm not bothered about the OoT remake is because FF7 stuff sent me through the 5 stages of grief already and I stopped expecting corporations to be the archivists of my formative experiences.
The Arcadion raids were sooooo much fun! I really think XIV shines when it leans into camp!
Nintendo owes you nothing and you certainly don't owe Nintendo any form of loyalty or respect for something you played in the 90's. Art is a separate entity from the business that surrounds it. Take the remake for what it is, the original ain't going anywhere.
