Our study published today suggests that mycorrhizal fungi might be contributing to crop plant PFAS accumulation, at least in some species. Durum wheat and barley shoots had higher PFAS concentrations when they were colonised by mycorrhizal fungi.

Have you ever thought about what mycorrhizal fungi are doing with PFAS in the soil?
We know these ‘friendly fungi’ can help their host plant tolerate soil heavy metal contamination and even immobilise microplastics. But PFAS are different because they’re water-soluble and highly mobile...
It’s 2026 and you still can’t play as a female character in Farming Simulator?? 🤦🏻♀️
The accumulation of PFAS in plant tissues didn’t negatively affect the plant (biomass) or fungi (colonisation), but it may have consequences for the consumer, as PFAS bioaccumulates up the food chain. 🌾🥩🍽️

I’m in Granada 🇪🇸 this week to attend the Root-Benefit symposium @rootbenefit.bsky.social.
What a great community of EU scientists, all working on beneficial microbes to further sustainable agriculture. I’ll be talking tomorrow about #mycorrhiza and #biofortification!
