#Zebrafinch retina stained with a calcium marker, revealing a tightly layered neural map beneath a simple looking tissue sheet. Built for life in bright open Australian habitats, their visual system is tuned for speed, precision, and rapid decision making. #FluorescenceFriday #Retina
Back again with another #FluorescenceFriday retina post because the zebra finch retina still looks unreal under the microscope. A tiny layered neural circuit built for fast and precise vision in these small #songbirds. #ZebraFinch #Retina #Neurobiology

Looks like a cosmic explosion… but it’s actually a #zebrafishretina 🔬 Pancone line expressing syGCaMP6f Confocal, whole-mount prep Sometimes biology doesn’t need enhancement to look spectacular. #FluorescenceFriday #Neuroscience #Retina
For today’s #FluorescenceFriday, the #rods clearly chose chaos What you’re looking at are long, beautifully coiled outer segments of rod #photoreceptors… basically the retina showing off its inner spaghetti aesthetic. Elegant, tangled, and absolutely essential for seeing in low light.
One year since my paper “AAV-mediated transduction of songbird retina” was published in Frontiers in Physiology. It’s been great to see it reach ~3,400 views and ~740 downloads across a global audience. Really grateful to everyone involved in this work. www.frontiersin.org/journals/phy...

Although the world outside still feels grey and wintry, under the microscope the retina reveals a vibrant landscape of color. For #FluorescenceFriday: a section of the avian retina showing beautifully organized neuronal layers from inner to outer retina. #Neuroscience #Retina #Microscopy
#FluorescenceFriday ✨ A glimpse into the beautifully layered architecture of the zebra finch retina highlighting the remarkable stratification of retinal cells and circuits from two different perspectives: 🔬 First image: a side view
