As for the song itself: in this BBC performance from last year, Jarvis Cocker mentions that Haynes offered him a part in the film, but he didn't take it, opting to contribute this song instead. It's yet another example of the Britpop/glam connection, and a missed opportunity I mourn!
I love this whole section of the film because, as always, it shows such great kindness to Arthur, a provincial who's way late to the party even back home. He arrives just in time for the Death of Glitter concert pretty much, but the Flaming Creatures accept him and make him feel like one of them.
Velvet Goldmine mixtape, day 9: "We Are the Boys"
Written by Pulp for the film, this one is barely present in the final edit -- just a little snippet. But it leads into one of the most memorable moments in all of VG.

For the Placebo fans — the VELVET GOLDMINE mixtape continues!
This press conference, sprinkled with Polari, is THE moment for Arthur. He sees Brian and finally sees himself. His "that's me!" is still so resonant for so many.
"We Are the Boys" introduces the press conference where Brian Slade announces he's bisexual, a clear reference to Bowie's 1972 Michael Watts interview where he did the same. (it also features Mandy Slade's best makeup look of the whole movie)

Lastly, Peter Swords King's makeup/hair on Arthur here is so so perfect. King talked about drawing on his own 70s experiences here -- especially in the little puffer of hair powder. (A gorgeously tactile detail)
Velvet Goldmine mixtape, day 8: "20th Century Boy"
So much to talk about with this one! From links to contemporary British music, to Marc Bolan and T. Rex, to Peter Swords King's hair/makeup work on Arthur, this is scene is packed.
