One way to parse @adamprz.bsky.social's "democracy is a system in which parties lose elections" is as statement about competitiveness and its role in actualizing the benefits of representative democracy. This trend, even if it didn't feed proto-authoritarianism is, thus, Very Bad.

Thanks to freshly gerrymandered House maps across the country, the number of competitive districts will fall to a new low of 33 (or less) this year, and only 15 are true toss-ups.

In 1976, 101 U.S. House seats were structurally competitive. Under the new 2026 maps, that number could fall to 33 — and just 15 are true toss-ups.
