The facts and science behind how to control image parameters are more meaningful once you've found frustrations you need help overcoming. Before that they're at best trivia, at worst: noise.
Many people: I don't really know what to do with a telephoto in daily use Me: God I'd forgotten how nice having a walk-around long tele is E-1, 18-180
E-1, 18-180
The last remnants of my favorite corner E-1, 18-180
Look I love film y'all know that, but you'll never convince me it's a better investment for poor beginners or for learning. I got an E-1 5mp pro DSLR rated for 150,000 shots and an 18-180mm all-in-one for like the price of an AE-1 kit and maybe two rolls of slide film, tops.
Ditch lily season E-1, 18-180
Yes film cameras—especially manual ones—will do wonders for deepening your discipline and understanding. And yes they were once how everyone learned. But they don't have to be any more, and I remain an advocate of letting people focus on how to see images until they start getting frustrated first.
