2. Using the Regimes of the World (RoW) measure the authors show that the world now has 87 democracies (liberal and electoral) and 92 autocracies (electoral and closed). Autocracies are home to 74% of the world’s population. 3(8)
5. Assessing the cumulative effects of autocratization over the last 25 years shows that 85 countries have taken significant steps towards more autocratic rule. Most of them – 59% – remain substantially below their initial levels of democracy by the end of 2025. 6(8)
