De estas cuatro especies de Vespa, solo Vespa crabro es autóctona. La avispa europea forma parte de nuestros ecosistemas desde siempre y cumple su papel como depredador natural. En cambio, V. velutina, V. orientalis y V. bicolor tienen un impacto directo sobre la apicultura.
