Trainwrecker. That's the name of this stunning mushroom I found in our woods this morning.
It's one of the few fungi species that can cope with creosote and other preservatives in wood. "Trainwrecker" because this wood-rotting fungus can attack and weaken railroad ties.
There was another grim UN report last week about the health of our planet and typically, it received little media coverage.
Just two datapoints:
- We dump *52 million tons* of plastic waste into the ocean EVERY YEAR
- There are 24.4 trillion pieces of microplastics in the world's upper oceans
"Wild salmon are on the verge of extinction."
"River kills will keep happening until someone in power decides that what dies in our waters matters more than the industry that caused the pollution in the first place."

Several news outlets — The Washington Post, USA Today, and Tagesschau (Germany’s main evening TV news program on public media), among them — failed to mention climate change when reporting on the extreme heat in Western Europe and the East Coast of the US last week.
Given the crowds, traffic jams, reservation systems, and lines, your backyard may now offer a better experience of nature than many national parks.
The senseless plunder continues.
