While my sympathy is limited, a 23 year old tech nerd with likely no media experience giving cringey answers to the FT about working 90 hour weeks and eating steak is probably less deserving of our dunks than the billionaires and VCs that have convinced him this is how he must live to be valued.

This (pulled from www.nature.com/articles/d41...) is utterly true, despite decades of government underinvestment leading to the current catastrophe. The intelligent choice would be to put more investment into research, fundamental, translational, and applied.
And this, from the Guardian piece, gets to the foolish choices that have been made. We do not need to do fewer things better. We need to do more things better. We need to invest more. That's the only way to make the fundamental discoveries we need to deal with a changing world.
