It's legitimately crazy that the Federalist Society managed to converge on "We need to rip up the entire post-1929 and post-1964 civil compacts and that's how we'll preserve our traditions." Yeah, it's obviously bigoted in motive, but also these *were* the compromises that preserved traditions.

A part of me is glad I was taught that way, and a part of me wishes I had been taught instead that we were still in the middle of a *very* recent fight-- that, as John Roberts has shown, there were people born under Jim Crow making it their life's work to bring it back.

One reason I think you get the sharp Z/Millennial vs. Gen-X/Boomer divide in perception and politics is that millennials and Zs were born entirely on the 'formal, legal and aspirationally social equality' side of the line. We *believed* it when our teachers said anyone can do anything in society.
