Here's the updated "Funding Models Are Not Binary" slide from my Feature/Product/Business talk #ATmosphereConf. Turns out there are even more great examples already in the Atmosphere!

For any early birds at #atmosphereconf, I'm heading to JJ Coffee at 8am.
After a few months of getting our flippers wet, we realized something: Gander is a bit of an odd duck in tech, especially in how it gets built and supported.
Traditional venture capital funding doesn't fit a benefit company like ours. Likewise with a lot of government programs.
I also learned that UBC pays for capital improvements by building housing and selling to the public, including presales. Good example of cross-subsidy.
@gandersocial.ca user co-op, @geomys.org maintainer co-op (my label not theirs), @hypha.coop worker co-op, just to name a few.
@bad-example.com @anisota.net @blackskyweb.xyz @graze.social have ads, subscriptions, or Github sponsors links currently live.
Most funding conversations collapse into "how do we get money from outside" (grants, investment). Cross-subsidization flips it to "how do we generate money ourselves to fund what we care about." Seems like a more durable and more autonomous position for OSS.

Good morning, Day 2! @robin.berjon.com will be sharing Matadisco, a system for publishing metadata for open data at 4:40. Come find him or @mosh.bsky.social to talk open data discovery, DASL.ing, or webtil.es! #atmosphereconf

For founders, having even 2 people a few stages ahead of you to call on for questions is so valuable.
Who has done this for you? Whom have you done this for?
Grateful for @case.bsky.social who barely knew me but made time to help me think through a big decision years ago.
