1/4 Really excited to share this new preprint led by PhD student Yu Lin Tan, where together with Tiago Branco we explored how distributed brain circuits converge onto a central escape hub and are integrated to dynamically compute flexible survival decisions. @sainsburywellcome.bsky.social

2/4 Yu Lin combined a tremendous set of approaches: multi-region Neuropixels recordings, GLMs, synaptic anatomy, dendritic physiology and biophysical modelling — revealing that in the dPAG, the timing of presynaptic activity outweighs synapse location in shaping input efficacy.
3/4 We further show this mechanism can flexibly control behavior:
cingulate cortex shifts the balance between reward seeking and escape during motivational conflict by reshaping the temporal dynamics of inputs onto PAG. Big thanks also to Natalia Zernika-Glover and Ashviniy Thamilmaran for help!
