Did you all know that Lord of the Rings is considered YA?
Apparently, a/ya is not about the themes or "heaviness" of emotion, but about tropes and pg-R ratings.
So my book maybe isn't adult after all, cause there are no sex scenes, and ONE character is 18.

Never mind that its about war, and depression, and survivors' guilt; never mind that its about suicide and hate and violence; mental breaks and long recoveries; about how you CAN'T heal while still young-- No on page sex scenes and less than one profanity per page? Young adult.

There are always one or two words that belong only to one character. For example, one character might say "Really?" while another says "For real?" It's subtle, but it's constant.
