I try not to care about the number itself, but I do care whether researchers are finding, reading and ideally citing the papers we publish in our journals - because that tells us if they’re useful to the community.

Alex and James have done a great job here in articulating the conflicting issues we face with the dreaded Impact Factor. We all know it’s a highly flawed metric for so many reasons, but its influence is so pervasive across the research ecosystem that it’s hard to completely ignore it.
No single metric (or even set of metrics) can fully capture the value of a paper or a journal, but I do wish we could collectively find a more nuanced approach to research assessment. A decade plus of DORA has helped, but we’ve still got a long way to go…
Over the past year, @biologyopen.bsky.social has expanded its Fast & Fair initiative to accelerate peer review. The results are impressive - take a look at their latest preprint to find out more: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Enjoyed a very convincing talk by @seemagrewal.bsky.social explaining why choosing a non-profit publishers benefits the community; revenues are used to support researchers, rather than filling the pockets of the publisher. Find more reasons here: journals.biologists.com/jcs/pages/re...

Paying peer reviewers works. Expanded Fast & Fair experiment @biologyopen.bsky.social: • 5.5 vs 37.7 working days to decision with reviews • ~3 vs ~9 reviewer invitations per manuscript • no reduction in editor-assessed review quality • similar acceptance rates www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
