When you bring up class warfare they feel attack because no matter how broke, no matter how impoverished they feel they are in the top bracket. Why? Their world view is that of a caste system and they always put themselves in the highest caste (which isn't where those that pander to them would).
The irony is that a 26 y/o who's still an E4 can't reenlist. A 30 y/o who's an E5 can't reenlist. Why? Up-or-Out. It doesn't matter if you're good at your job, if you're not constantly seeking promotions to at least E6 (where you can stay long enough to retire) you're out.
