one of my favourite things, both reading and writing, is a prologue that makes you go "what the FUCK did that have to do with anything" that sits in the back of your mind as you realize over the course of the book, with creeping horror, exactly what the fuck that had to do with anything

Folks don’t be real readers anymore. Skipping prologue, epilogue, big paragraph just to get to dialogue. You’re missing a lot! These things work together!
