This Standard rose at my front door, I think the variety is "Birthday Girl", was quite sparse and falling over when I first moved in about 5 years ago. I strapped it to a support and got rid of the ants, pruned it quite hard for the first three years. It looked good last year and I didn't prune it.
I'm going to prune it hard again come September. Also going to try and take some cuttings and get them going as I have a couple of small square beds where I've been trying to grow rhododendrons but they aren't taking, soil too alkaline I guess, though I did give them plenty of ericaceous compost.
