This fascinating preview of our next #BigRedBook on Yorkshire's East Riding shows how we can connect the built environment with the documented history of a region, in this case, the Yorkshire Wolds at Nunburnholme. 🗃️
Have used the Victoria County History for decades. Any opportunity to bring its excellent work to people’s attention. Not on the payroll - just a fan.
So proud to have been on the team that produced 👇.
It is a great exhibition even if I say so myself. 😁
This reconstruction of a carnyx is truly incredible! If you want to see an original, the 'Norfolk Carnyx' in Norwich Castle Museum featured as a frontispiece in our April #AntiquityEditorial

🚨 Brand new post: Bedford, Part I to 1945: Controversy and Construction - Bedford was the only town found in default of the 1919 Housing Act's mandate to build 'homes for heroes'. But it went on to build over 1100 council homes by 1939.

This history of elements of modern #Loughborough is another of our forthcoming attractions.
It will include the amazingly involved branches of protestant nonconformity, the cultural expressions of the town's many migrant communities, druids, and - of course - sport.
Lots of sport. #Skystorians

A joke about Bedford is that no-one, perhaps even some amongst its residents, is quite sure where it is. AI solves the confusion by telling us it is ‘located in the East of England region … the cou…
Obviously intriguing stuff in church at Nunburnholme,Yorks, E Riding - not just its early medieval cross shaft. Place to look for both will be Victoria County History vol 252, now with publisher, expected 2027. @vch-home.bsky.social is foundation stone of English local history. Congratulations!

The church of St James, Nunburnholme (East Riding) may look a bit on the ordinary side but it houses several symbolic mysteries, such as the imagery of its famous Anglo-Scandinavian cross pillar. But VCH East Riding Vol XI (in press) had to deal with another, its eccentric tower arch. 1/5
Congratulations to all involved. We understand a little of the commitment required - our VCH history of Loughborough (only post 1750 and only social and cultural history at the moment) is "just" 100,000 words but has kept us occupied for what seems like ages. Out later this year. Watch this space.

But there is a problem. The resurrected in 12th-century imagery are depicted as sexless, but the single naked figure has a penis. In fact its imagery echoes contemporary vision narratives of Purgatory or Hell with the naked male figure to one side occupying the place of the dreamer. 4/5
