A year ago, Detroit Metro journalist, Steve Neavling, wrote about the decades-long search for September Jones. Her relatives saw the story, and now the long-lost soul singer from Detroit has been found and is collecting royalties. She had no idea how popular her music still was in the U.K.
Part of teaching about queer zines and queer history is talking about the affair between Secret Heart Ken and Earring Magic Ken in the mid 1990s.
This officially licensed post card was produced in 1994, just one year after Ken came out.
Happy Pride, Y’all
this is such a great retrospective!
I was a guest on The Queer Program in the late winter or spring of 1993, talking about the activist work I was doing in my high school to make condoms available and getting better sex ed for students.
gay pride transforming into gay wrath
This is coming up this weekend! Finally!!!
Happy queer pride and happy queer wrath month.
Holy Shit! QZAP friend @sheerspite.bsky.social has zinified Teleny by Oscar Wilde.
Once censored as smutty smut, now punk as fuck!
Issue 1 of the punk / new wave zine Search & Destroy (1977) has an "International Directory" page which includes a fanzine section: "Many new wave magazines are limited production / xerox labors of love. So send money / at the least send a self-addressed stamped envelope if a reply is desired."
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the time I got queer bashed on 14th St. in San Francisco right near Red Dora's Bearded Lady, and also the anniversary of my meet-cute w/Chris 💗.
My response to the violence was to bomb the sidewalk where it happened so others would know.

Several years later, just after we had launched QZAP, we were at a Madison Zine Fest, and discovered that that stencil had been documented in Josh McPhee's book Stencil Pirates!!

For decades, September Jones’s voice traveled farther than she knew.
We are super excited to announce that we’re collaborating with our friends at SEEN and Cactus+ to bring The Lollipop Generation by one of the pioneers of Queercore, filmmaker, artist and zinester G.B. Jones, back to Milwaukee.
I'm tabling zines at the @nycplan.org Art & Propaganda Fair on Sat. Tablers were asked to have at least one free item, so I had 500 Librarians and Archivists with Palestine stickers made. Support NYC public libraries and check out my zines and get a free sticker! www.eventbrite.com/e/public-lib...
realized anything in the public domain can be a zine and i am drunk with power!!!!
QZAP - The Queer Zine Archive Project
If you weren’t around in 1992 Milwaukee, you might not realize how transformative it was to see real, live gay people — talking about critical issues — on broadcast TV.
Not as victims. But agents of change.
Thank you to Tad Kriofske Mainella for telling the story of The Queer Program! #BeSeen 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

“We liked to say that the show was ‘by, for, and about Queers.’ There was no ‘straight filter’ applied.”
