So, I read an article which said this ain't Roman.
The Netherlands Ministry of Culture own this photo and their description isn't great (see thread)
So my revision here is that it IS Roman, but lacks the typical iron sole, so caused confusion.
A woodworks plane found in a sunken ship. It still has the score marks on the side, from when the maker was preparing to hollow it out.
It's sometimes said to be Roman, but it's actually Dutch, similar, but not the same.
Not all artisans in Rome were freeborn. Many did their apprenticeship, and gained their skills whilst enslaved.
