UPDATE: U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman has called a 2 p.m. hearing on the feds' motion to dismiss:
One day after a judge threatened to hold a hearing that could have put Chicago U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros on the stand, his office moved to avoid it by permanently dropping charges against two defendants in a massive fraud case. From @chicago.suntimes.com: chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2026/0...
#BREAKING Federal prosecutors in Chicago have moved to permanently dismiss charges against two defendants in a fraud case tied to Loretto Hospital in what appears to be a bid to avoid a hearing over prosecutorial misconduct before a grand jury:
“I’m not going to wait. I’m not waiting two weeks. No.” Federal judge in Chicago sets June 17 hearing over alleged grand jury misconduct by prosecutor, with only one way out: chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2026/0...
Coleman also said, “Pandoras box has been opened.” “I don’t know if by doing this you get to put everything back in the box.”
Again, thanks to @sophiesherry.bsky.social for the reporting above.
More Coleman: “I assume as an office there’s a level of angst of how this has all gotten to this point. "We have cases throughout this building that are all in turmoil.” “The public is trying to figure out how do we have trust in this.”
UPDATE: Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman agreed today to permanently dismiss the charges against these two fraud defendants, per @sophiesherry.bsky.social. But she repeatedly asked, “where is Mr. Boutros?” (He wasn’t there.)
I won’t be able to attend this hearing, but I’ll share @chicago.suntimes.com coverage as it comes in.
