The US embargo on Cuba goes back 66 years. According to a state dept memo at the time, the people of Cuba supported Castro, who had removed the US backed dictatorship. Thus it was decided to "deny money and supplies to Cuba" to "bring about hunger, desperation, and the overthrow of government"
