This week’s #LastFourWatched - not a whole lot worth singing about though Dr Mabuse was a wild one and Devil Wears Prada 2 was entertaining #LetterboxdFriday
My #LastFourWatched, all from 1933. Once again the French directors from this era seem to be on another level. Rene Clair’s 14 JUILLET is a lovely romance, and Julien Duvivier’s LA TETE D’UN HOMME is a gritty detective flick with a villain on par with Peter Lorre’s character in M. #LetterboxdFriday
My #LastFourWatched, all from 1932. Highlights of the week were two Marcel Pagnol-scripted films, MARIUS and FANNY, which essentially play like one long film. Perfect blend of lightness and drama. Also really enjoyed Duvivier’s POIL DE CARROTTE which is sweet but gets dark. #LetterboxdFriday
My #LastFourWatched, all from 1931. Japan’s first talkie, THE NEIGHBOR’S WIFE AND MINE, Ozu-like with moments of broad comedy. Two fun René Clair comedies, À NOUS LA LIBERTÉ & LE MILLION. But GW Pabst’s excellent mineshaft thriller KAMERADSCHAFT is the best of the bunch this week. #LetterboxdFriday
My #lastfourwatched - continuing to watch a bunch of new-to-me films from the early 1930s. Highlights by far are the ALL QUIET-like WESTFRONT 1918, and the excellent performance by Harry Bauer as a self-made millionaire facing the hollowness of his accomplishments in DAVID GOLDER
