The #RuleOfLaw in #Greece is deteriorating.
In May 2026, our organisations submitted a new Addendum to our Report to the European Commission on the Rule of Law in Greece: the second addendum since the submission of the main report in January 2026.

The issues we raise are not isolated. They are interconnected and longstanding, and concern systemic failures that are worsening.
(7/8)
We worryingly note that the public statements made by the European Commissioner upon his 12/5 mission to Greece do not refer to the deficiencies consistently brought to the Commission’s attention and identified in the Rule of Law Report, and to the need for measures from the Greek government.
(4/8)
Significant legal, judicial and political developments directly relevant to the state of the rule of law in Greece have unfolded, and we document them across 6 key areas:
(2/8)
🔹 Pushbacks & police violence
🔹 NGOs & civil society
🔹 Surveillance scandal
🔹 Press freedom & SLAPPs
🔹 Legislative process
🔹 Obstruction of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in the context of the "OPEKEPE scandal"
(3/8)
Meanwhile, the Greek government has continued to make repeated references to the Commission’s Rule of Law Report as proof that the state of the rule of law is improving in Greece.
(5/8)
This illustrates yet again the concerns we have conveyed to the Commission as regards the government’s use of the Rule of Law Report to support a domestic narrative of improvement and to disregard pervasive deficiencies.
