📣 A new preprint by noashima.bsky.social! 📣 How does ocean warming affect viral infection? Infection of algae by a giant virus is arrested intracellularly under elevated temperature, with the late replication stage blocked. Infection can later resume, revealing a reversible arrest state 🌊
In this study, we used #metabolomics to trace #viral infections in #coccolithophore blooms across the Atlantic analyzing data from four cruises including the #TARA Breizh and #TARA Gayoso expeditions.

The core-resistance genes could serve as potential markers to detect resistant cells during algal blooms. A better understanding of algal resistance mechanisms is key to unraveling the host-virus arms race in the ocean and bloom dynamics. 🌊 >>

🌊Paper announcement! 📣
Viral infections rewire the metabolic makeup of their host and thereby create distinct chemical signatures. Can we use metabolic biomarkers to diagnose infections of algal blooms in the ocean?
