Congratulations @sophiemartinlab.bsky.social group for your latest publcation in @natcomms.nature.com Phosphoregulation of the novel hemi-arrestin MAPK scaffold Sms1 prevents untimely mating @mocel.bsky.social @sciencesunige.bsky.social
Arp2/3-dependent actin assembly shapes endosomes and promotes intracellular trafficking in fission yeast

This protein is essential for cells to communicate with a mating partner. Its discovery also reveals that diverse organisms use convergent pathways (with likely distinct evolutionary origins) to solve the same signalling problem.
As initially presented on Biorxiv: bsky.app/profile/soph..., but with a new figure, where we probe pheromone-induced polarized growth.
"Humbled to receive this recognition. This belongs as much to my team, my family, & to my home, Palestine: the people, the place, the joyful stubbornness to enjoy life."
Cheers buddy @gautamdey.bsky.social
Thx to my mentors @sophiemartinlab.bsky.social, @paveltomancak.bsky.social, & Pierre Gönczy.

How do cells communicate? They use Sms1 ! 🙂
More seriously, Sms1 is the scaffold of the pheromone-MAPK signalling cascade in fission yeast, which @borissieber.bsky.social et al discovered.

Cdc42 is a Rho-family GTPase conserved across eukaryotes, where it plays essential roles in cell polarization. In single-celled yeast systems, Cdc42 is a key driver of symmetry breaking and polarized ...

Polarized growth in #Spombe needs Cdc42, but what role does it play in cell fusion? @sajjitasaha.bsky.social @sophiemartinlab.bsky.social &co show that mitotic polarized growth responds linearly to Cdc42 levels, but mating involves a sharp switch-like response @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4bvGIhb
