"Egypt has pursued the same playbook it deployed during the genocide in Gaza: pragmatic mediation, coalition building, and converting regional instability into financial and diplomatic leverage." - @husseinbaoumi.bsky.social on how Egypt is positioning itself in this regional war.

Next weekend will mark six years since Sarah Hegazi left this world. On Sunday, June 14, folks will gather in Dupont Circle (Washington, DC), as has been done every year since her passing, to remember what she stood for, to read her writings, and to stand in togetherness. 🤍

Later this month will mark six years since the late Sarah Hegazi took her life in exile following years of targeting by the Egyptian authorities. Friends in Toronto will be gathering in her memory and honor later today.
If you're in DC next Sunday, join me for this screening of One in a Million, a film that touches on themes of war and exile across a ten year period, as part of @dcdoxfest.bsky.social at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. I'll be moderating the post-show Q&A as well!

🕊️ Today, June 8, marks eight years since the world lost Anthony Bourdain. I often think about the beautiful and humble way he brought us stories from around the world. I reflect on how he turned places that the headlines made sound scary into ones we'd want to get to know.
Ahmed Douma has been back in Egyptian state custody since April 6, 2026, following a sustained campaign targeting him for his free expression. Prior to his recent arrest, Ahmed had been questioned before the Supreme State Security Prosecution 6 times in a less-than-2 year period.
"The world has visited many terrible things on the Palestinian people, none more shameful than robbing them of their basic humanity." -Anthony Bourdain Rest in peace, Tony. Your voice is so sorely missed today. 🤍

Devastating news from Egypt where activist and poet Ahmed Douma, only just released from prison in August 2023 after serving nearly 10 years behind bars, has been sentenced to a new one year term on spreading false news charges (Case 4894/2026). The cycle of injustice continues.
