There has also been a large arrival of Quail over the last couple of nights with 10 ‘new’ birds reported around the #LDV during the last 48 hours - bringing this years total to over 20, with another individual caught and ringed as part of our long-term study into the species @yorkbirding.bsky.social
Nice to also catch up with two Cattle Egrets at Wheldrake Ings after the heronry survey had taken place – thanks to @duncbye.bsky.social for joining and @ldvbirder.bsky.social for getting the news out on the Cattle Egrets.
100% of each sale goes straight to the Friends of the #LDV charity, or if you’d like to support their Corncrake fundraising campaign, books can be claimed as rewards – every penny counts with Aviva very generously matching each donation made 💰

Calling all birders and photographers in yorkshire, we have started colour ringing the Red Kites in parts of Yorkshire. If you see one please report to the email on the poster @northyorksbirds.bsky.social #redkites #raptors #birdsofprey
The second visit to the local heronry took place earlier this week as part of the @btobirds.bsky.social census, & after over 40 years of surveying this site, there are now almost as many Little Egrets (35 pairs) as Grey Herons (38 pairs) 🪺 @yorkbirding.bsky.social
Thank you to Yorkshire Water's @tophilllow.bsky.social team for supplying & delivering 11,500 reed plugs for use in the #LDV this week, which will help create & expand reedbeds throughout the reserve for a range of species - let us know if you'd like to join our volunteer team & help plant them! 😄
Nice to receive this record of a colour-ringed Oystercatcher seen in the Foggathorpe area by @duncbye.bsky.social this week – originally ringed in August 2009 as a first-year in Hampshire - next seen near Barnsley (April 2012) and Goole (April 2014) - likely to be breeding in the area.
Amazing to receive a @btobirds.bsky.social recovery of a Greylag ringed as a gosling in June 2008 (unfortunately found dead) - just 22 km away in January - 21 years and seven months after ringing (setting a new longevity record from ringing in the UK) - previous record held by another #LDV bird.
Another notable BTO recovery just in (although somewhat belatedly) - a juvenile Garden Warbler ringed at Wheldrake Ings (19/07/22) was recaught by Spanish ringers just 40 days later - 1,301 km south of the #LDV at Soto Bajo, Arguedas, Navarra, Spain @yorkbirding.bsky.social
Great to see the direct benefits of our ‘Nature Recovery We Can...’ project & relaunch recently at Elvington Air Museum, with two Swift boxes already built & installed in the Wharfe Valley - as the project says 'We Can…' if everyone gets involved & works together in support of #NatureRecovery
