In 1788, James Hutton sailed past Siccar Point, and discovered a gap in the rock record spanning around 60 million years. It was here that the study of geology took off.
Today is Hutton's 300th birthday, and in his honour BGS baker Steve has baked an unconformi-cake.
Happy birthday, James 🎂

Do our politicians act like they are properly aware that their actions today are changing climate on Earth for thousands of years to come?
Do they have sleepless nights and intensive exchange with experts over this huge responsibility?
Nice new paper about diversity&ecology of reef systems under different Cenozoic warmings
More than 700 geological samples from the vicinity of a former mine in Scotland is now available to scientists.
The specimens will be of interest for a range of further studies including critical mineral potential and the Ediacaran Period of the Precambrian.

We had a great time at the Deep Time Gala organised by @scottishgeology.bsky.social ! I'm glad people enjoyed learning about the Rhynie chert and it's strange organisms!
Nice reminder that the legacy of anthropogenic climate change could be LONG. Notice here temperatures still elevated by 3000 CE even in the optimistic scenario's. From this paper: eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com?url=https%3A.... 🧪⚒️
Triassic was extremely volatile transient time period. Here is a nice synthesis of it's carbon cycle record, showing unstable beginning and later stabilization.

Bornholm is a remote island in the heavily polluted Baltic Sea. Now the windswept "Danish paradise" finds itself at the centre of an environmental and geopolitical crisis.
We are in the Age of Humans - the Anthropocene.
Our new article (open access) shows how even with a moderate future emissions scenario, global temperature will still be elevated by 3-4°C in the year 3000!
Lifetime of our CO2 in the air is that long.

"Coral reef factories appear to be resilient, compromised only by extreme heat or combined stressors"
The nice thing, this study shows this to be the case across the last 50(ish) million years. 🧪🌊
