1/4 Incredibly important by @melanie_ward showing over recent years 32 UK registered charities have sent £28 million to illegal West Bank settlements. Yesterday the UK gov said it would meet with the Charity Commission to discuss. But this should be just the beginning. bsky.app/profile/mela...
I spoke to BBC Radio 4 about some of the ways UK charities are funnelling money to illegal Israeli settlements - and getting taxpayer subsidies for doing so. This must end now; the Charity Commission have to act.
Settlements and violent settlers devastate the chance of peace and a two state solution. This is their purpose. Last week I submitted a formal complaint to the Charity Commission about these 32 ‘charities’ who have been funnelling money to the settlements.
As well as the need to properly invest in defence, @alcarns.bsky.social is rightly saying that the UK lags behind others such as Sweden and Finland in our national resilience and preparedness for the threats we face. I said exactly this in Parliament recently. We need to turbo boost this work.
Funding illegal Israeli settlements is not charitable activity. It is extremist activity. Working with Israeli human researchers, I found at least 32 UK charities who have sent £28 million to settlements in recent years. There’s a likely taxpayer subsidy of at least £5 million through Gift Aid.
