and the they passed the bus and the cyclist dropped the dude at the next stop 😭😭😭

Turn north (toward Pt Chev peninsula) instead of the usual south (toward Mt Albert) to cross Carrington Road at the temporary crossing.
Watch out for directions and signage telling you where to cross - it may change.
