Harold and the Purple Crayon energy.
Today I learned that my 11-year-old has been keeping a full-sized pencil sharpener in her backpack. Unfortunately, I only learned this because said sharpener came open, dumping a month's worth of pencil shavings that released a cloud of gray dust all over the kitchen when I opened her bag.
Relatedly, the sand dunes at the north end of Ten Mile Beach (near Fort Bragg, California) are absolutely stunning.
This kid is just effortlessly cool.

The Knesset passed a bill today mandating the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of terror - but not for Jews. There is a word for a legal system where different legal standards apply to different categories of people. www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...
Since I'm seeing postitive references to Bowling Alone today…. a reminder that Robert Putnam is your typical white male communitarian who dismisses all the unpaid labor women put into maintaining community. bsky.app/profile/jess...
This book really helped me solidify some of my thoughts, but an important phrase that stuck in my brain is that people, stuck in inhumane and unreasonable systems, will make the most humane and reasonable choices available to them.
As a single male, care work hadn’t been much on my mind until my parents started aging. But I think what clarified much of what I wondered about care work was crystallized by the incomparable @jessicacalarco.com - care work, by US women, has become a de facto social policy. #RPVBooks
Sometimes people who happen to be poor also want to buy their kids Doritos so they don't feel like weirdos.

Putnam acknowledged in an NYT interview that he depends on his wife for all his social connections! Yet, he still hasn't realized that women today are too f*ing tired and fed up to keep doing that work for men. Especially if men aren't helping with care at home. www.nytimes.com/2024/07/13/m...
Food policing poor families isn't a win for nutrition--it's a loss for dignity and joy. As Brea Perry and I find in our research (see reply), low-income parents buy food treats for their kids because they want their kids to feel happy and normal--and they can't afford to do so in bigger ways.

The author of “Bowling Alone” warned us about social isolation and its effect on democracy a quarter century ago. Things have only gotten worse.
